The Prime Minister of Jamaica is Jamaica's head of government, currently Portia Simpson Miller. Simpson Miller, as leader of the governing People's National Party (PNP), was sworn in as Prime Minister on 5 January 2012, succeeding Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) leader Andrew Holness. This was a result of the PNP's victory in Jamaica's 29 December 2011 general election. The Prime Minister is formally appointed into office by the Governor General of Jamaica, who represents Elizabeth II, the Queen of Jamaica (Jamaica's Head of State). Portia Lucretia Simpson-Miller, ON, MP (born 12 December 1945) is a Jamaican politician who has been the seventh Prime Minister of Jamaica since 5 January 2012. Simpson-Miller, who leads the People's National Party, previously served as Prime Minister from 2006 to 2007; she was Leader of the Opposition from 2007 to 2012.() While serving as Prime Minister, Simpson-Miller also chose to hold the positions of Minister of Defence, Development, Information and Sports.
